According to the Final Forecast Report of the Director of Statistics for 1964-65, the actual production of food grains in 1964-65 was estimated at 58-02 lakh tonnes, i.e., 4-88 lakh tonnes over the base level production of 53-14 lakh tonnes as against the creation of an additional production potential of 11 -35 lakh tonnes. the preliminary estimate for 1965-66 is not available. Actual production will however be below the production potential in view of the seasonal factor. Chemical fertilisers have not also been available to the targeted extent. The south-west monsoon has been a failure and most of the major irrigation systems of the State were not opened for irrigation at all. the main short-term crop, the Kuruvai of Thanjavur, did not however, do too badly.
