dc.description.abstractDuring the 5th Five Year Plan emphasis was laid on self sufficiency in food grains. Progress in the production of food grains particularly Rice was spectacular. Estimated production of rice during 1977-78 was 299.98 lakhs tonnes against the 5th Plan target of 3.00 lakhs tonnes. Base level (1973-74) production of rice for the 5th Plan was 236.6 lakhs tonnes. This means an increase of 22% yield in 4 years. The achievement in respect of high yielding verities of paddy has been most spectacular. The original 5th Plan target was 30,000 ha.
