The minor irrigation programme covers mainly ground water development along with small surface irrigation projects, Ground water irrigation works include (a) construction, restoration, boring or deepening of wells; (b) installation of persian wheels, diesel or electric pumpsets, etc. on-wells and other resources; and (c) installation of tubewells including filter points. In the context of new agricultural technology centred on fertiliser responsive high yielding seed varieties, it is imperative to augment the sources of irrigation. The new seed varieties are observed to be more responsive under controlled irrigation, largely possible under minor irrigation sources.
