The role of electricity sector in the process of economic development has received considerable attention. This can be seen from the fact that electricity sector has accounted for between one-sixth and one-fifth of the total plan investment during the various Five Year Plans. The installed capacity has substantially increased and so has the demand for electricity due to growing industrialisation, proliferation of electric appliances in the household sector, electrification of villages, greater use of electric pump-sets as means of irrigation, etc. In the recent years, demand has continued to outstrip supply. In view of the increasing requirement of electricity for sustaining economic growth, an appraisal as well as review of the power sector has perhaps become even more relevant than before.
