Kanyakumari is a newly formed district transferred to the Madras State on 1st November 1956 from the erstwhile Travancore- Cochin State, consequent on the Re-organization of States. It is more or less triangular in shape and lies between 8° 4 and 8. 30 of northern latitudes and 77. 20 and 77.45 of eastern longitudes. It is bounded on the north by mountains, on the south by the Indian Ocean, on the east by the Tirunelveli district and the Gulf of Mannar, and on the west by the Kerala State and the Arabian Set. This is the southernmost district of the Madras State and also the southernmost promontory of the Indian sub-continent.
