Abstract

The report on Inland Navigation in India evaluates the state, challenges, and potential of inland water transport (IWT) as a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable mode of transport. Despite historically significant contributions to trade, IWT has declined due to competition from rail and road transport, limited navigability, and inadequate infrastructure. The study highlights opportunities for bulk goods transport, employment generation, and integration with industrial planning. Key recommendations include designating National Waterways, establishing a National Inland Water Transport Authority, investing in navigation facilities, and aligning IWT development with broader economic policies. A coordinated approach is essential to revitalize inland navigation and enhance India’s transport efficiency.
