Abstract

Prior to the establishment of an organised system of Milk Procurement and distribution in the public sector, the demand of fluid milk for urban consumption was met from animals housed within the city limits and or in the surrounding rural areas under extremely unhygienic conditions. The supply was mostly in the hands of middle man who supplied adulterated and unhygienically produced milk to the city population on the one hand and on the other, they exploited the rural producers by depriving them of a fair return.
