Abstract

The Annual Development Plan 1971-72 for Madhya Pradesh focuses on the implementation and progress of principal infrastructure projects costing Rs. 5 crores and above, including thermal power generation, rural electrification, multipurpose irrigation projects, and transmission systems. Key projects include the Satpura Thermal Power Station in Betul District, Korba Thermal Stations II and III, and the Tawa Multipurpose Project, aimed at irrigating large tracts of land. The plan details project commencement and estimated completion dates, approved and revised cost estimates, expenditure outlays, and foreign exchange requirements. Progress indicators such as electricity generation capacity (MW), rural electrification targets, irrigation coverage, and labour requirements for both construction and operational phases are highlighted. Employment generation during construction and maintenance phases is emphasized, specifying skilled, technical, non-technical, and unskilled personnel needs. Transmission system expansions, including double-circuit 220 kV and 132 kV lines and 66 kV lines, aim to supply power to urban and rural areas. The Tawa Multipurpose Project, divided into two phases, is designed to irrigate over 7 lakh acres through the completion of dams, canals, and distribution systems, with estimated costs reflecting large-scale infrastructure investment. Overall, the plan underscores Madhya Pradesh’s strategic focus on strengthening power generation, irrigation, and rural electrification to support socio-economic development and improve agricultural productivity.
