Abstract

Rajasthan is known for its vast stretch of barren lands, sun bleached surface, rocks and rolling sand dunes. Recurring drought and scarcity conditions have been jolting the economy of the State time and again thereby retarding the process of growth. The State has an area of 3.42 lakh sq. kms, which is the second largest in the country. Its population, as per 1971 census, was placed at 257.66 lakhs. About 82 percent of the population is rural and more than 70 percent is dependent on agricultural and allied occupations for their livelihood.
