Abstract

In the field of general education, while there was board emphasis(during the fifth plan period) on elementary education covering classes I to VIII, closer attention was paid more towards universalisation of primary education for children of the age-group 6-11. Moreover, once enrolled in the elementary schools there was hardly any endeavor for retention of children or their regular attendance. Consequently, while the figures of enrolment at the primary stage has ben increasing, there has been at the same time a high rate of dropout after initial enrolment.
