The State of Madhya Bharat was formed in 1948, by the fusion of 24 Co-venanting States, comprising an area of 46,478 sq. miles. Approximately, 15,800 sq. miles or 1/3rd area of the State is treated as Government forests. The forests are mostly dry deciduous yielding a variety of forest produce and wild life. Owing to sharp variations in the climate end soil, the flora differs widely from zerophytic growth in the northern Districts to semi-wet tropical in the south-west corner of the State. Thorn forest dominates in the north and teak forest stands out prominent in the south.
