Abstract
The development effort undertaken in the hill areas of Darjeeling has gathered a momentum of its own, particularly after the Sixth Han. In endeavouring to meet the basic needs of the inhabitants of the hill areas, a variety of projects have been initiated; some have been completed and others are nearing completion. Agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry and small industries have been fostered and developed and the necessary infrastructure created y such schemes as the establishment of new roads fed the improvement and degradation of old ones. The people are now conscious and eager or change. The Seventh Han win therefore, necessarily have to sustain and diversify the development effort to provide for the basic needs of the people such as food, fodder, fuel, drinking- water health, education etc. of the hill people.
