Abstract
The present enquiry is the first attempt to undertake a study more specifically related to assessment of social change. Such an assessment is a difficult task, partly because of paucity of basic statistical data, and also because the concepts and methods in this field are not well developed. This is a preliminary study and it is hoped that it will be possible to follow it up with a more detailed enquiry in the coming years. This study is connected with the other PEO studies, especially the Bench-Mark Survey and the Acceptance of Practices Survey because it has been conducted in three out of the six villages selected for the latter enquiries. In building up a picture of the changing economic and social life of these villages, therefore, the data of this study are complementary to the quantitative data collected through these two latter surveys.
