dc.description.abstractUttar Pradesh, with 1109 lakh people (1981 census estimates) and 2.94 lakh square kilometres of area, is the most popular State accounting for about 16 percent of the country’s population and about 9 percent of its area. The density of population per square kilometre rise from 300 in 1971 to 377 in 1981 as against the corresponding figures of 177 and 221 per square kilometre at the country level. The density of population in the State in 1981 was higher than all the States in the country except Kerala (654), West Bengal (614) and Bihar (402).
