Abstract

Situated in the North Western corner of the Indian Union. Punjab State has a long sensitive border with Pakistan. This fact Union. Punjab State has a long sensitive border with Pakistan. This fact considerably influences the economic situation of the State. Despite the unfavorable location factor, its economy has responded remarkably well to the planning efforts of the last more than two decades. Not only has it shown much more resilience but has also actually reversed an economic growth far higher then the other States of the country. This is clearly indicated by the highest per capital income of the State in the country. At current prices, the per capita income in 1970-71 was Fs. 99 as compared to Rs. 829 of Haryana, Rs. 775 of Maharashtra and Rs. 778 of Gujrat State. At constant prices, the per capita income stood at Rs. 472 as against Rs. 432 of Haryana, Rs. 425 of Gujrat and Rs. 421 of Maharashtra State.
