Abstract

Agricultural production continues to occupy the fore front in enhancing the national wealth and per capita income of the State. Scientific Research and its adaptation in the field has resulted in the achievement of a break through in agricultural production. The food production during 1971-72 has reached an all time record of 70.46 lakh tonnes, of which rice production alone accounts for 53.62 lakh tonnes, compared to the production of 35.50 lakh tonnes of rice during base year 1968-69. This phenomenal achievement is attributed mainly to adoption of improved agricultural techniques like growing of high yielding varieties, use of high dosages of fertilisers, and timely plant protection measures. An area of 55.29 lakh acres of paddy has been covered under the programme out of the total area of 66.00 lakhs acres under paddy during 1971-72, which represents a 83 per cent coverage.
