Abstract
Nagaland the 16th State of the Indian Union joined the process of National Economic Planning as a full-fledged State in the later part of the 3rd. Five Year Plan. The State with a Geographical area of 16,579 square Kms. has a population of 12,15,573 according to 1991 population census. Taking the annual population growth rate of 5.68 % the projected population by 2000 is estimated at 18,370,000. The State is a tribal dominated State with 88 % of its population being tribal. Nearly 83% of the people live in the rural areas.
The State has a literacy rate of around 84%. The Sex ratio of the State is 886 females per 1000 males. The density of population of the State is 73 per square Km, one of the lowest in the Country. Kohima District has the highest density of population with 98 per square Km. and Phek District accounts for the lowest density of population with 50 per square Km.
