The Advance Report on Selected Building Projects (April 1958) evaluates the design and construction strategies of two major industrial developments—the Heavy Electrical Project at Bhopal and the Fertilizer Project at Nangal—with the objective of improving efficiency and reducing costs. Prepared by the Selected Buildings Projects Team, the report advocates a functional design approach tailored to operational requirements and local conditions. Key recommendations include rationalizing building heights, adopting lighter and more efficient roof systems, replacing riveted structures with welded construction, and applying Indian standards for structural loading to reduce material use. Innovative design alternatives such as barrel-shell roofing and inverted catenary silos are proposed to achieve substantial savings in steel, cement, and overall project costs. Collectively, the findings demonstrate the potential for significant economic and material savings through informed engineering decisions and coordinated planning in large-scale industrial construction projects.
