Abstract

The economy of the State of Orissa continues to be Characterised by agricultural dominance. It received several set backs due to natural calamities during the 7th Plan period (1985-90). The first three years of the 7th Plan saw a sharp fall in the food grain production from 69.7 lakh M.Ts. in 1985-86 to 50.6 lakh M.T. in 1987-88 due to the severe drought conditions that gripped all the areas of the State during 1987. However, much to the relief of the people an uptrend in food production was noticed during the year 1988-89 with a production of 69.8 lakh M.Ts. of foodgrains, thanks to timely on-set of monsoon with adequate and wide spread precipitation.
