The 1982 livestock census has estimated the livestock population of the state at about 60 lakhs. This includes about 23 lakhs of cattle and 6 lakhs of Buffaloes. To rest are sheep, goats and Polity. The Strategy adopted for development of cattle and buffalo is to upgrade the local livestock to crossbred, improve their management and provide better health care. The up gradation of cattle is done through Intensive cattle Development Programme. About 50% of the battle population of the State has already been brought under the Intensive Cattle Development Programme. In case of buffaloes also, the up gradation Programme is under implementation.
