The birth of the new State of Maharashtra on the 1st May 1960 has given rise to new hopes and aspirations. This historical event has also afforded greater opportunities for the refashioning of the State’s economy and reorienting it to all-sided growth. In the First Five-Year Plan, the areas that now constitute the State of Maharashtra were parts of three different States. In the major part of the Second Plan, they came together but formed part of a bigger State.
