The Government of Maharashtra has explored the potential of inland water transport (IWT) for passenger services in the Bombay region to improve urban connectivity and reduce congestion. This study assesses commuter and coastal services, highlighting promising short-distance ferry routes within the region and the Bombay-Goa route for tourism. Key considerations include route planning, modern vessel selection, essential infrastructure development, and appropriate fare structures. While IWT offers strategic advantages, economic viability depends on operational efficiencies, government support for infrastructure, and careful planning to address commuter needs in a densely populated urban environment.
