Abstract
The Task Force Report on On-Farm Management of Water in Irrigated and Rainfed Areas (1980) examines strategies to improve agricultural productivity through efficient water management in India. Despite significant irrigation infrastructure development, only 57 million hectares were effectively irrigated by 1980, with water use efficiencies ranging from 50% to 70%, leading to issues like waterlogging and salinity. The report identifies opportunities to enhance crop yields through optimal crop selection, irrigation scheduling, and efficient water utilization in irrigated areas, while emphasizing water harvesting, supplemental irrigation, and watershed development in rainfed regions. It also recommends research and training, institutional strengthening, and decision support systems to ensure sustainable and equitable water management, ultimately supporting rural economic growth and improving agricultural output.
