Abstract

The Union Territory of Delhi is spread over an area of 1483 sq. kms. of which 891 sq. kms, is rural and 592 sq. kms. is urban. the urban area, which is 40% of the total area., accommodates about 93% of the Population, making population density in the urban area considerably higher than the rural areas. the overall population density in Delhi at 4194 persons per sq. km. (1981 census was the highest in the country. The population of the Union Territory which was 17.44 lakhs in 1951 had increased to 62.20 lakhs in 1981, at an average rate of 53% per decade between 1951 and 1981.
