dc.description.abstractThe primary objectives of the Cauvery-Mettur Project were (i) a targeted additional area of 301,000 acres to be irrigated by the Grand Anicut Canal and the Vadavar Extension system, (ii) an additional targeted area of 70,000 acres of double cropped lands in the old Cauvery-delta and (iii) improved irrigation to a little over one million acres in what is known as the “old Cauvery delta” under paddy cultivation from time immemorial, yet susceptible to draughts and flood havoc.
