The "Preliminary Study of Chemists and Chemical Technologists in India (1955)" provides a detailed analysis of the chemistry workforce, examining demographics, employment sectors, specialization, and salary structures. By the end of 1955, an estimated 7,300 chemists were active in India, with 60% captured in the National Register. Industrial chemistry dominated specializations, while educational institutions employed the largest proportion of chemists. Average salaries varied by sector and experience, with doctoral holders earning higher pay. Unemployment was concentrated among younger chemists aged 21–30. The study underscores the need for improved data coverage and strategic manpower planning to strengthen India’s scientific and industrial capabilities in chemistry.
