Abstract
The report on the implementation of the National Transport Policy (1990-91) evaluates the adoption of recommendations from the National Transport Policy Committee and outlines government actions for enhancing India’s transport sector. With 145 out of 157 recommendations accepted, the policy aims to address capacity shortages, infrastructure gaps, and inefficient pricing structures across transport modes. Key strategies include improving rural connectivity, promoting energy-efficient transport, rationalizing freight policies, and fostering private sector participation. Urban and suburban transport enhancements, railway modernization, and containerized freight handling are emphasized alongside road infrastructure reforms, tax rationalization, and phased abolition of octroi. Maritime and inland waterway development is supported through subsidies, national waterway designation, port modernization, and pipeline expansion. The report underscores integrated transport planning, continuous monitoring, and investment prioritization to achieve a sustainable, efficient, and economically viable transport system in India.
