Abstract

Against the high demographic growth rate, the economic growth in Assam has been entirely inadequate and incommensurate. Because of the inadequate growth rate compared to the population growth, the per capita income since 1948, at constant prices, shows a very sluggish growth even as compared to All India as is clear from the following table :- (for a real comparison of incomes at the All India and Assam levels, the comparative purchasing power of money has to be taken into account to ensure that like is compared to like.
