Abstract

The following sections attempt to study the growth and performance of Electricity Supply Undertakings in India in recent years. The study is mainly confined to 1985-86 to 1987-88 period. The undertakings covered are the public utilities in the public sector mainly the State Electricity Boards (SEBs), Electricity Departments (EDs) of the States and the Union Territories (UTs) and some Central Government Undertakings. To lend completeness to the coverage, the data pertaining to private sector public utilities has also been indicated wherever the data is available. The data base from this study is the material supplied by the different Boards/Departments and the Central Sector agencies to the Planning Commission during October 1986- January 1987 in connection with assessment of their internal resources for the Annual Plan 1987-88.
