Abstract
The Documentation Bulletin on Evaluation Studies (1952–1994) compiles findings from 689 evaluations conducted by state and union territory governments between 1985–1992, alongside 157 studies by the Programme Evaluation Organisation (PEO). These evaluations assessed the effectiveness of diverse developmental programs across sectors such as health, agriculture, irrigation, education, and rural welfare. States like Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu led in evaluation activity, providing insights to inform policy planning, program improvement, and academic research. The 1993 Evaluation Report on the Western Ghats Development Programme (WGDP) in Tamil Nadu highlighted successes in sustainable development, environmental conservation, and socio-economic upliftment. The programme improved local livelihoods through enhanced agricultural practices, market access, and employment generation while promoting afforestation and water body conservation. Key challenges included coordination gaps and concerns over sustainability. Recommendations emphasized integrated development approaches, long-term strategic planning, and capacity building for local communities. Collectively, these evaluations underscore the critical role of systematic assessment in shaping effective, community-oriented, and environmentally sustainable development initiatives in India.
