dc.description.abstractThe question of the improvement of the economic and health conditions of the malnad parts in the State has come up frequently for discussion in the Legislative Council and the Representative Assembly and suggestions have been made that a committee may be appointed to examine the problem and suggest suitable measures for improvement. 2. Government have always attached great importance to the improvement of the malnad and have taken steps on several occasions in the past to investigate the causes for the backwardness of the tracts and have also undertaken various measures of improvement. A scheme of malnad improvement was started in 1914 on the recommendations made by Mr. K. Matthan who had been specially appointed for the purpose. the working of the scheme was reviewed in 1924 and lines of work which required concentrated attention were indicated. Mr. 8. Keshaviengar was appointed in 1925 to conduct an economic survey of typical areas in the malnad tracts.
