Abstract
General Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state, with its highest share of 16.4 percent in country’s population. It is also the fourth largest state in geographical area, encompassing 2.94 lakh square kms. and comprising 83 districts, 901 Development blocks and 112804 populated villages. The geographical area of the state is 9.0 percent of the country’s area. A lower share in country’s area with higher share in its population has led to a higher density of population in the state compared with most states and the country, as a whole. The density in the state was 473 person per square kms. in 1991 against 274 for the country. Population The total population of the state was 883.41 lakh in 1971. It increased to 1108.62 lakh in 1981 and still further to 1391.12 lakh in 1991. The increases in population in these two decades, 1971-81 and 1981-91, were almost the same, at 25.49% and 25.48% respectively. As against these trends, the increase in country’s population shows a declining trend, from 25.00% of 1971-81 to 23.85% of 1981-91.
