Abstract

The Progress of Selected Projects (Up to September 1957) report provides an extensive review of India’s key infrastructure and industrial projects during the Second Five Year Plan, highlighting developments in iron and steel, fertilizers, irrigation, and power generation. Significant progress was reported for major steel plants, including Bhilai, Durgapur, and Rourkela, with substantial completion of land acquisition, structural works, and equipment installation. Fertilizer production, led by the Sindri and Nangal projects, continued to expand, supporting agricultural growth. In the power and irrigation sectors, projects such as the Damodar Valley Corporation, Bhakra-Nangal, Koyna Hydro Electric, Hirakud Dam, and Mahanadi Delta Scheme demonstrated ongoing advancements in canal construction, powerhouses, and embankments, despite challenges posed by seasonal rains, land acquisition, and contractor delays. Thermal power initiatives, including Korba and Trombay, progressed with civil, mechanical, and electrical works. Employment generation across all projects was significant, providing livelihoods for thousands of skilled and unskilled workers. The report underscores the ambitious scope of India’s development strategy, reflecting a strong commitment to enhancing industrial capacity, irrigation coverage, and energy supply. Continuous monitoring and evaluation were emphasized to ensure timely completion and maximize economic and social benefits.
