Abstract

The high rate of growth of population is the combined effect of natural increases and immigration. The natural rate of growth of population in Assam is no higher that of India (Table 3). As a result of the high rate of growth of population, the population density of the State in 1981 is estimated to be 254 persons per sq. km. as against the country’s 221. There are wide variations in density within the State even at district level.
