Abstract

Bihar is the second most populous State of India. According to the Census of 1991 (Provisional Population Totals) its population stands at 86.3 millions which constitutes 10.2 per cent of the total population of the country. The State covers an area old ,1.74 lakh sq. Kms. which constitute 5.3 per cent of the total area of the Country, the State has therefore, to support 10.2 per cent of the population in only 5.3 per cent of the area. the density of population in Bihar in 1991 is 497 per sq. Kms. as it against 267- for the country. The corresponding figures for 1981 were 402 and 208.
