Abstract
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands comprise two groups separated by the Ten Degree Channel, covering an area of 3,215 sq.miles (Andamans: 2,580 sq.miles; Nicobars: 635 sq.miles). As of 1951, population was ~31,000, mostly concentrated around Port Blair; recent settlement of displaced persons increased population. The region is largely undeveloped, with dense forests and limited infrastructure. The Second Five Year Plan, effectively the first integrated plan, focuses on opening up the country, settling people, developing agriculture, infrastructure, and social services. Total planned expenditure: Rs. 592.50 lakhs (Public Sector). Challenges include remote location, lack of skilled personnel, dependence on mainland for materials, and difficult terrain.
