dc.description.abstractMaharashtra is the third largest State in India, both in terms of area and population. According to 1971 census, its geographical area is 307,762 sq. kms. or 9.4 per cent of the total area of the country. The population of the State is 5.04 crores which forms 9.2 per cent of India’s total population. Its rural population for mid 1977-78 is estimated at 3.84 crores of which about 43 per cent are estimated to be in labour force. The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and the Buddhists constitute about 18 per cent of the total population of the State.
