Abstract
The Agricultural season for 1972 began fairly well with early showers in the month of April all over the State, except in coastal region, where dry spell prevailed. Good showers however were received in the month of June. The onset of Southwest monsoon, which normally starts quite early in use was rather delayed and this threatened Kharif prospects is almost all the districts of the State. Farmers who had sown their crops on receipt of early rains suffered most due to non receipt of rains in July and August. In many cases they had to loose the first crop and reshow fields. The dry spell affected groundnut sowing to a great extent, as also kharif pulses and ragi. The long sell of drought conditions prevailing from July on wards resulted in large areas being not sown in the districts Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur, Bijjapur, Bellary, Chitradurga and Kolar. The overall crop situation in the State was thoroughly unsatisfactory till the 1st week of September.
