Abstract

Uniform Standards of Weights and Measures based on the scientific rational and internationally accepted metric system were established for the first time by the standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1956 adopted by Govt, of India. For the same purpose this department was established in October, 1958. An Act to provide for the enforcement of Standards of Weights and Measures for matters concerned there with was also passed in 1959. the use of metric system was made compulsory since 1-4-1963 but no prosecution was launched till October, 1974.
