The Third Five Year Plan Report on Ayurveda, presented by the Planning Commission of India, emphasizes the revitalization and integration of indigenous medicine within the national healthcare system, with a particular focus on Ayurveda. Recognizing the unique potential and challenges of traditional practices, the report recommends standardizing Ayurvedic education, including uniform curricula, post-graduate and research centers, and proficiency in Sanskrit to ensure adherence to classical texts. The establishment of a statutory Central Council of Indian Medicine and dedicated state-level directorates is proposed to regulate education, practice, and infrastructure development, including Ayurvedic hospitals, dispensaries, and mobile units to enhance rural healthcare access. Integration with modern medicine is highlighted to provide comprehensive care without compromising traditional principles, supported by dedicated pharmacological research, a standardized Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia, and a Central Drugs Control Organization. The Ayurveda Panel meetings further elaborated on these objectives, prioritizing the development of indigenous systems, research-centric institutions, and academic chairs in the history of medicine, while encouraging sub-committees for focused problem-solving. Challenges identified include a shortage of qualified educators, limited research funding, and public misconceptions regarding Ayurveda, necessitating sustained government support and awareness campaigns. Collectively, these initiatives aim to institutionalize, modernize, and elevate Ayurveda as a scientifically credible, accessible, and culturally grounded medical system, ensuring its continued contribution to India’s health and development.
