Abstract
The region of Uttar Pradesh (now called Uttaranchal) comprises 8 districts of Almora, Nainital and Pithoragarh of Kumaon division and Chamoli, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal. Uttarkashi and Dehradun of Garhwal division. It is one of the five economic regions of the State. It is spread in 51,125 sq. km. area and accounts for 17.4 per cent of the area of the State. There are wide variations in physical features within the area, causing significant variations in land structure, vegetation and climate. According to 1991 Census the population of Uttaranchal (U.P. Hill area) is 59.01 lakh (Annexure-1 X It is the second largest populated hill region after J and K.. Its share in the State's population is 4.30 per cent. In the population 28.62 lakh or 48.51 per cent of the total population are literates which is higher than their proportion (33.84%) in the state's population. Another interesting feature is that except in the districts of Uttarkashi, Dehradun and Nainital, in the other 5 districts there are more females than males.
