Abstract

During the year 1978-79 the target of total food production was 215 lakh tonnes. Out of this 80 lakh tonnes were to be contributed by kharif crops and 135 lakh tonnes were expected from rabbi crops. The actual production during the year 1978-79 however, exceeded the target by 13 lakh tonnes. The main highlights of the performance of agricultural production programme during 1978-79 was a record production of rice (59 lakh tonnes) and wheat (112 lakh tonnes) Of the total increase in food production in the country during 1978-79 over 1977-78. 50 per cent was contributed by U. P. alone.
