Abstract
Kerala occupies only a little over one per cent of the total area of the country, but has to support four per cent of the country’s population. The population density of the Stale is the highest compared to the rest of India—549 per sq. km. as against the country’s average of 178. The land-man ratio is, thus, the lowest in Kerala as compared with other regions, which coupled with the fact that only about 5(> per cent of the State's area is available for cultivation, makes the development problem of the State particularly severe.
