dc.description.abstractThe idea that the laws of nature can be understood by man, and that man can use this knowledge for his own ends is, historically considered, a relatively new idea. It has, nevertheless, proved to be a powerful one: the dominating feature of the contemporary world is the intense cultivation of science on a large scale, and its systematic application to meet the economic, social and cultural needs of the peoples of the world.
