Abstract

The All India Conference on the Role of the Voluntary Sector in National Development (2002) examined the vital contributions of voluntary organizations (VOs) in supporting India’s developmental goals. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the conference emphasized the integration of VOs alongside central and state governments, Panchayati Raj institutions, and the private sector in nation-building. Key discussions highlighted the need for formal recognition of VOs in planning, capacity building to enhance professionalism and accountability, and the establishment of a supportive legal and institutional framework to streamline funding and project implementation. Participants also addressed regional imbalances in VO development, the promotion of community-based innovation, and enhanced coordination between governmental and non-governmental entities. Technical sessions underscored the importance of transparency, advocacy for marginalized populations, and collaborative approaches to social welfare. The conference concluded with recommendations to treat VOs as strategic partners rather than contractors, ensuring sustained dialogue and integrated efforts in health, education, and rural development. This event underscored the crucial role of civil society in complementing government initiatives and fostering sustainable, inclusive national development.
